C3 Community Projects

The Center for Creative Connections (C3) promotes conversation and community by collaborating with artists and institutions to develop and produce art installations and experiences for and about the community. The result of the collaboration is a mutual understanding of each other's creative process—everyone learns something new.

Carrito de Memorias
January-April 2019

Carrito de Memorias (Cart of Memories) is a project by C3 Visiting Artist Karla García inspired by the food carts commonly found across Mexico. These carts often act as a congregational space where the community shares stories and personal experiences over a meal. García’s cart invites visitors to reflect on how meal preparation and family traditions shape our understanding of gender. Visitors contribute their own cultural traditions using the natural fiber papers provided. García will compile these responses into a series of sculptures embodying the public’s collective memories.

Carrito de Memorias is partially funded by grants from The Onstead Institute and the University of North Texas College of Visual Arts Student Project Award. Construction of the cart was made possible with the equipment provided by University of North Texas’ Fabrication Lab.
